The slip from the ridge is no longer legible at ground level
It was under the bundle of tiles, it drizzled, and the figure at the valley could be a 4 or a 9. So either back up onto the roof — or estimate generously, and your margin is decided at exactly that point.
The part-surfaces are only there as one figure
Main roof, hip, dormer, the area behind the chimney: added up in your head, and only the total written on the slip. When the client asks three months later how the 186 square metres came about, nobody can derive it any more.
Pitch and rafter spacing live somewhere else
The roof pitch is on the photo of the inclinometer, the rafter spacing in a message to a colleague, the length of the verge in someone's head. For the material list — tiles per square metre, battens per linear metre, insulation per rafter bay — everything has to be gathered up again.
Pitched roof and flat roof in the same spreadsheet
On a pitched roof what counts is pitch, part-surfaces and junctions; on a flat roof it is the parapet, the outlets, the upstands and the tapered insulation. A spreadsheet that is supposed to cover both either becomes unreadable or is wrong for one of the two cases.
After the measurement, the roof changes
Once the roof is stripped it turns out the sheathing has to go too, a second dormer is added, the chimney junction is more involved than expected. If the measurement sits in one spreadsheet and the costing in a second, every change has to be maintained in two places — or, in practice, only in one.
The foreman's account costs extra
For the foreman to be allowed to record the measurement up on the roof at all, he needs his own account — and with plancraft that is a separately charged office or field seat, with HERO an additional app licence (as of Aug 2026). Part-surfaces as groups, every measurement its own row
You cut the roof into groups the way you see it from up there: main roof left and right, hip, dormer, the area behind the chimney. Inside each group, every measurement stands as its own row — with a name, its dimensions and its unit. No collective line item that nobody can later read a meaning out of.
Pitch and existing build-up as a note on row and group
What belongs to the part-surface but fits into no measurement — the pitch you took, the existing build-up, the junction height — you write alongside it as a note. There is no separate pitch field; the note sits on the row or on the group. With 35 degrees on the main roof and 20 degrees on the dormer it stays traceable which covering and which underlay was costed where.
Eaves, verge, ridge, hip and valley in linear metres
What is a line on the roof is recorded as one: eaves, verge, ridge, hips and valleys as linear metres, assigned to their group. Gutter, eaves flashing, ridge roll, valley flashing and verge tiles are costed from them without anyone estimating the length a second time.
Junctions and penetrations as pieces
Chimney junction, wall junction to the neighbouring gable, vent pipe, aerial penetration, roof window: as piece rows in the group they belong to. Exactly the line items that otherwise get estimated as a lump sum at the end of the quote.
Pitched roof and flat roof, each in its own terms
On a pitched roof part-surfaces with their lines and penetrations and the pitch as a note; on a flat roof the area, the parapet in linear metres, outlets and rooflights as pieces, the upstand as its own line. The units and line items for both come with the installation.
Site work in the browser, no app store
The interface is a web application and runs on tablet and phone in the browser. The foreman gets an account and records up top what he measures; the site sees only job, measurement, hours and receipts — no prices, no customer data, no settings. That scoping is enforced on the server, not merely hidden in the menu.
From the roof measurement straight into the costing
Areas, lines and piece counts sit as rows in the measurement, sorted by part-surface and totalled per unit. One step carries them into the job's scope of work — no file, no export, nothing typed twice. There the costing works the costing works with a real markup structure per cost type — material, labour, equipment, subcontracted work. Photos on the row, not in a chat thread
The photo of the chimney junction hangs on the chimney junction line, the photo of the damaged valley on the valley. When the client or the loss adjuster has a question, the picture is right next to the dimension instead of buried in a chat thread.
And the honest limits
The system does not measure for you and does not draw for you: 3D roof geometry, CAD roof modelling, deriving areas from aerial imagery or drone survey, and laser coupling are not included. You take the dimensions on the roof or from the drawing — the system holds them per group, totals them per unit and calculates with them in the costing. No stock control, no bookkeeping, no payroll, no portal for your customers.

The screens show a flat-roof refurbishment — on a pitched roof it is the same form, the groups are just called main roof, hip and dormer. Four screens from the measurement: the row list, the entry form for a single row, the groups the roof is cut into, and the totals per unit that are carried into the scope of work afterwards. The screens are in German — that is the language the application runs in.

Area, length or count: you pick the type and the form rearranges itself. For a line it asks length and count instead of length and width, the unit becomes metres, and the quantity adds up as you type. What would otherwise go on the slip of paper sits as a note on the row.
Main roof, parapet, insulation, drainage, scaffolding. What belongs to a section but fits into no number — the existing build-up, the fall, the junction height — sits as a note on the group, not on a photo in a chat.
